ADAM SPEECE
OPTICAL MANAGER / CO-OWNER
Adam’s journey into the world of eyewear began in 2001, selling sunglasses at a mall kiosk while pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and Marketing. His passion for frames led him to LensCrafters, where he honed his expertise in prescription eyewear. Over the next decade, Adam immersed himself in corporate optical retail, primarily with Luxottica, before stepping into a leadership role as Director of Retail Operations at a luxury optical boutique in Pittsburgh. When the company was acquired by private equity in 2017, Adam pivoted to addiction medicine and mental health, exploring a new path for six years—until he realized his true passion was always optical retail. Seeing a gap in Pittsburgh’s independent eyewear scene, he set out to create a boutique that celebrates craftsmanship, individuality, and artistry. Now, as co-owner of Obsidian Exceptional Eyewear, Adam is committed to offering exquisitely designed frames from independent designers worldwide, paired with premium lenses from independent labs. His dedication to quality and personal expression shines through in every detail of the Obsidian experience.
NICHOLAS SPEECE
TECHNILOGICAL INFRASTRUCTURE / CO-OWNER
Despite coming into optical with no prior experience, Nicholas quickly mastered opticianry and became an invaluable part of Obsidian Exceptional Eyewear. As an equal partner in Obsidian, Nick has not only curated unique, client-focused product lines, but has also ensured the boutique remains at the forefront of security and innovation. With a background in technology, Nick has worked for major firms inside and outside of Washington, D.C., bringing a wealth of expertise in data security. Now residing in D.C. with his wife Nikki, he oversees the protection of patient data, ensuring every Obsidian client’s information remains safe and secure. His passion for craftsmanship, technology, and adventure shines through in every detail—from his exclusive Obsidian merchandise to introducing Flying Eyes Eyewear, a standout collection for pilots and thrill-seekers.
JUSTIN JOHNSTON
INVENTORY CONTROL MANAGER
Justin’s journey in optical retail began in 2010 at a national retailer, where he quickly mastered both opticianry and optometric technology. In 2012, he transitioned to a regional luxury optical retailer as Inventory and Distribution Manager, ensuring boutique locations were stocked with the latest, most sought-after frames. As the company grew, so did Justin’s role—until its acquisition by private equity, leading him to continue his inventory management expertise across various industries. Today, as Inventory Control Manager for Obsidian Exceptional Eyewear, Justin curates a selection of exclusive frames from global artisans, ensuring customers always have access to the finest independent eyewear.
NIKKI SPEECE
LICENSED OPTICIAN / LEAD OPTICIAN
With over two decades in the optical industry, Nikki is a Virginia Licensed Optician whose expertise spans eyewear manufacturing, contact lens fabrication, and precision fittings. As a key force behind Obsidian Exceptional Eyewear, she helped shape the boutique into a destination for both cutting-edge frames and the clearest lenses. Her lab knowledge was instrumental in selecting the highest-quality lenses for Obsidian’s customers, ensuring unmatched clarity and comfort. Beyond optical, Nikki’s passion for animal rescue shines through—she has fostered numerous birds and rabbits and provides a loving home to cherished pets.
JASON SIMONTON, O.D.
OPTOMETRIST
Dr. Jason Simonton earned his Biology degree from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown before completing his Doctor of Optometry at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 2007. His training included diverse externships in optometric sub‑specialties, highlighted by an experience in Bethel, Alaska at the Yukon‑Kuskokwim Delta Regional Hospital. In practice, Dr. Simonton has cultivated expertise in specialty contact lenses, low vision care, and the treatment of dry eye, while also managing a wide range of ocular diseases. Outside of the exam room, he enjoys time with his family, following sporting events, and exploring the latest breakthroughs in nutraceuticals.
